Shiny Vintage Things

Well, yesterday I visited an antique market in Greensboro. This particular one is so large that one needs to take a break around lunch and go get sustenance before continuing on! I happen to have only an hour this time so I could only hit the high spots and move along.....so hard!

For some reason I love shiny vintage things. I find myself drawn to rinestones and jewelry pieces that are dull looking...maybe even missing a stone or two. I was contemplating this as my magpie like pile began growing on the sales counter, as a kind salesman kept coming and relieving me of what I had collected. I see all the pristine jewelry...and yes, it is old and it is pretty. But for me, something about the tarnish, the dullness, the missing peices draws me in more.

I finally came upon a thought that felt right to me about why I have this preference....it is...time....to me these qualities represent time....something that you can't create, but only wait for. I can simulate the hands of time on my art by distressing and inking, staining, scratching...but these pieces show true time to me....and that feels valuable to me.

One more thought I had was that I find myself embracing broken things. Not because I want to fix them...but because I want to embrace them as valuable. Might I even feel that they are even more valuable? Now there was a thought that just plain asks for journaling! Don't you think?
Here is a picture of a few of my finds.
And again, thanks for listening.

  1. Beautiful! I too am drawn to those wonderful rhinestones. I love the vintage and have a whole little box full of the trinkets! Yup, I think your topic on embracing the broken is a good one. You are reminding me of a Dicken's novel not sure which one but the little orphans come to mind! And no, I'm not LOL. I think there are times when the broken is very valuable...Hugs,

  2. Hi Terri, thanks for commenting on my card :) I wrote the how to instructions under the picture of my card on my blog :). Love the vintage jewels and your story on what facinates you about it!! I think it's a bit like people they are in a way not human without any flaws, and real living people with flaws are people from wich we can learn. We learn by our mistakes and become more whole after beeing "flawed" than before I guess...

Have a wonderfully creative day, Linda.

  3. I've been to Greensboro a few times and will be back- you'll have to tell me about the antique market, and I hear there are a bunch of neat shops all on museum row or some street downtown.

  6. Hello Terri, love your shiny find today..I am the same I love old things as they have a history and character rather than the throw way world that we live in today. I visit a flemarket near my home most Wednesdays and they have the most fascinating things there..I recently picked up a whole lot of vintage cigarette cards..still have to use them though. I like your insightful writing on your blog and thanks for visiting my blog and great comments
